Sunny days with bright blue skies are the best days for riding your motorcycle, but that’s not always what you get. Sometimes, you’ve just got to contend with rain. Riding your motorcycle in the rain is a little bit different than riding on dry roads. Here’s what you need to do in order to keep yourself safe when it’s wet outside and you still need to ride.

Check the Weather

It’s always a smart idea to check the weather forecast before you head out for a ride. Light rain shouldn’t be a deterrent, but if there are flash flood warnings or if high winds, hail, or lightning is on the forecast, you may want to avoid riding or find a different way to get where you need to go.

Make Yourself Visible

A black motorcycle jacket is going to be hard to see against wet roads and gray skies, so you’re going to have to become more visible to other motorists to avoid an accident. You can buy reflective riding gear in a light or neon color, or simply wear an orange reflective safety vest over your normal riding gear. You can use reflective tape on your helmet and your bike to make yourself stand out even more. Adding brighter lights to your bike can also help you to see and be seen.

Stay Focused & Ride With Care

You’ll need to be more vigilant when you’re riding your motorcycle in rainy weather. Always ride while sober, alert, and feeling good so that you aren’t distracted by fatigue, substances, or illness. Be ready to react to the actions of drives around you so that you can swerve out of the way or slow down in advance of congestion.
