Utility terrain vehicles, also known as UTVs or side-by-sides, are convenient powersports vehicles that can seat anywhere from two to six passengers at a time. This feature makes them excellent for families who want to do some off-road riding together. However, riding with your kids means taking some extra safety precautions to keep them safe. Here’s what you should do.

Gear Kids Up

Just like you, your kids need to be wearing the proper safety gear when going off-roading. Invest in well-fitting powersports helmets and some goggles for eye protection. Long pants and long sleeves are ideal, and sturdy ankle boots are a good option. Make sure that any long hair is tied up out of the way and that clothing doesn’t have any draping parts or cords that could get caught on anything.

Educate Kids on Safety

Once you’ve looked up the laws yourself to make sure that your kids are okay to ride in your UTV in your area, you’ll also want to make sure that your kids understand how to be safe while riding in a UTV. Remind them that they should keep their seatbelts fastened and their arms and legs inside the vehicle when it’s moving. They should also not distract the operator of the vehicle. Make sure children understand that only adults should touch the controls on the side-by-side, too.
